Diversion

Map showing a temporary closure of Sherwood Road in Bromsgrove between the A38/Austin Road/Sherwood Road roundabout and the Aldi entrance. The closure will be in place from 9:00pm on Friday 26 June until 5:00am on Monday 29 June. The closed section is highlighted in red, with an inset aerial image showing the closure location. Access to Aldi and the trading estate is retained throughout the works.

A signed vehicle diversion route is shown by a blue dashed line. Traffic travelling between Sherwood Road and Stoke Road is diverted via the A38, using the A38/Austin Road/Sherwood Road roundabout and the A38/Stoke Road/Charford Road junction before rejoining the local road network. The diversion operates in both directions and avoids the closed section of Sherwood Road running parallel to the A38.

Pedestrian access remains unaffected, and access to Aldi, Morrisons, and all businesses within the trading estate is maintained for the duration of the closure. Major roads and junctions, including Stoke Road, Sherwood Road, the A38, and the A38/Stoke Road/Charford Road junction, are labelled for reference.

April 2026

Scheme C

Stoke Road has reopened to two-way traffic in Bromsgrove, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the A38 Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme (BREP) Scheme C.

The scheme focuses on improving traffic flow and enhancing crossing facilities at the A38/Stoke Road/Charford Road junction. As part of the works, Stoke Road had been restricted to one-way traffic to allow for the widening of Stoke Road Bridge, enabling the addition of a third traffic lane. The project also includes lane realignment to improve ahead and right-turn movements, as well as better access to the left-turn lane towards the A38 southbound. Further work will continue as the scheme progresses.

The reopening follows a series of planned overnight closures between 16 and 21 April 2026, during which we and our contractor Colas completed the final stages of the bridge works. A temporary binder course surface is currently in place, with final surfacing and remaining elements of Scheme C to be completed at a later stage.

The reopening of Stoke Road represents a significant step forward in a complex section of the wider project. The bridge widening and road layout improvements are designed to increase capacity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety and reliability for road users. Local residents and businesses are expected to benefit from these long-term improvements.

With the road now open, we will monitor traffic movements over the coming days, including peak travel periods, to ensure the new layout operates effectively.

The A38 BREP is a major investment of over £50 million, aimed at reducing congestion, improving journey reliability, and supporting economic growth in the area.

Bridge extension - Pre-cast foundations and arches lifted into position on 27 to 28 November 2025, followed by wingwalls and spandrel walls on 17 to 18 December 2025.

Blinding was placed for the over slab, parapet walls have also been installed over the bridge. 20 March 2026.

Concrete slab cast 25 March 2026.

Challenges encountered, works area flooding.

Scheme D:  New Road (West) - overnight road closures

Works are continuing as part of the A38 Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme (BREP), specifically for Scheme D (A38/New Road junction improvements).

To safely carry out the next phase of works, New Road (west of the A38) will be temporarily closed overnight.

Closure dates and times

  • Tuesday 21 April – 8:00pm to 6:00am (Wednesday 22 April)
  • Wednesday 22 April – 8:00pm to 6:00am (Thursday 23 April)
  • Thursday 23 April – 8:00pm to 6:00am (Friday 24 April)

Location

Between the A38/New Road junction and Bant Mill Road. Please refer to the closure and diversion plan for full details.

Reason for closure

These closures are required to remove the central guide island, enabling the next stage of junction improvement works to proceed.

Additional information

Pedestrian access will remain open throughout the works.

Some noise may occur during the removal of the central island. To reduce disruption, these activities will be carried out at the start of each shift wherever possible.

Scheme C: Stoke Road Bridge – full night-time closures

As part of the final phase of the Stoke Road Bridge widening (A38 BREP Scheme C), essential works will take place between the A38 Charford Road junction and the Sherwood Road / Stoke Road junction.

To carry out these works safely, overnight road closures will be in place on the following dates:

Closure Times

8:00pm to 6:00am each night

Dates

  • Thursday 16 April to Friday 17 April 2026
  • Friday 17 April to Saturday 18 April 2026
  • Saturday 18 April to Sunday 19 April 2026
  • Sunday 19 April to Monday 20 April 2026
  • Monday 20 April to Tuesday 21 April 2026

Please note that not all closures may be required. Where possible, the road will remain open.

Confirmed closure dates will be displayed on local signage.

The works include:

  • removal of temporary traffic barriers
  • road resurfacing
  • reinstatement of road markings

This will allow the Sherwood Road / Stoke Road junction to return to its original two-way layout.

Impact on road users

Stoke Road will be closed in both directions to through traffic during working hours

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place and a diversion map can be seen below

A signed pedestrian route will be maintained on the south side of the road

Some low-level noise may occur, particularly at the start of each shift. Works are being coordinated with 91ÖÆƬ³§Regulatory Services to minimise disruption.

These works are a key part of the wider improvement programme. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Map showing a night-time road closure and diversion route for Stoke Road (A38). The closed section runs between the A38/Charford Road junction and the Warwick Avenue/Sherwood Road junction. During closures (8:00pm to 6:00am), Stoke Road is shut in both directions.

A signed diversion route is highlighted in a loop using New Road and surrounding local roads, reconnecting at Oakalls Roundabout to the north and the A38/Austin Road/Sherwood Road roundabout to the south. Vehicles wishing to access Stoke Road are directed via New Road or advised to turn around at either roundabout.

Pedestrian access is maintained along the southern footway. Vehicular access within the closure is limited to emergency vehicles only.

Additional notes indicate that diversion routes must follow classified roads where possible, and not all listed closure nights may be required.

March 2026

Scheme B - A38 Redditch Road (Hanbury Road)

Upcoming Improvement Works on the A38 Redditch Road.

As part of Scheme B improvement works, the next phase of construction will require a temporary closure of the A38 Redditch Road between Hanbury Turn and Buntsford Drive Roundabout.

Scheduled closures

The road will be closed from 8:00pm on Friday 27 March until 5:00am on Monday 30 March.

Works will be completed as quickly as possible. If they finish earlier than planned, the road will be reopened sooner than the times stated above.

Location of closure

A38 Redditch Road will be closed in both directions.

The closure will be in place between Hanbury Turn junction and Buntsford Drive Roundabout.

Purpose of the works

The closure is required to allow the installation of key infrastructure, including:

  • ducting for new street lighting
  • drainage connections

Access arrangements

  • signed diversion routes will be in place from the closure points and access to properties within the closure area will be maintained for residents
  • pedestrian access will remain available, including:
    • use of the existing push-button crossing
    • the northern footpath, which will remain open during the works

These works form part of the wider improvement programme for the area. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users while the works are carried out.

Please see diversion map below:

Map showing a formal vehicle diversion route for an A38 road closure near Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa. The A38 is closed between the A38/Buntsford Drive roundabout and Hanbury Turn from 20:00 on 27 March to 05:00 on 30 March. A blue dashed line indicates the signed diversion route. Northbound traffic is diverted from the A38 at Buntsford Drive roundabout through Bromsgrove, via the A38 Austin Road/Sherwood Road roundabout, Oakalls roundabout, then west along the A448 to the A450/A448 roundabout near Shenstone, continuing south on the A450 to the A442/A450 roundabout at Podmore, then south on the A442 through Cutnall Green to Hampton Lovett near Droitwich Spa, and finally east via the A38 Kidderminster Road/Westwood Road roundabout back to the A38 near Wychbold and Henbrook. Southbound vehicles follow the same route in reverse. A note states that formal diversion routes must use roads of the same classification as the closed road, so A-road traffic is diverted only via other A roads.
