Only 30% of professionals working in STEM roles today are women (Office for National Statistics, July 2024 to June 2025). Here in Worcestershire, we want to help change this.

By sharing real stories from women in STEM, we can challenge stereotypes, open more career pathways, and inspire the next generation to explore these ever-growing fields.

Women worldwide have played a huge part of the history of STEM, and 91ÖÆƬ³§is no exception:

• Physicist Mary Taylor Slow: one of the first women to study radio waves and electromagnetism, who went on to inspire young people teaching mathematics in Malvern 
• Jessy Blackburn: a British aviation pioneer from 91ÖÆƬ³§and one of the first women to fly a British monoplane
• Dr Joan Curran: a physicist who provided key contributions to the development of radar countermeasures in the second World War while working in Malvern
• Alice Ottely: a pioneering figure in women’s education in Worcestershire
• and many more....

91ÖÆƬ³§is full of young talent, as proven by the success of programmes such as Primary STEM Challenge and Generation STEM from our Early Careers 91ÖÆƬ³§team. This is why Women in STEM was created: to further push and support these initiatives, and to provide an array of STEM-themed inspiration and events across the year.

Partnering with Women in Tech and Innovation from 91ÖÆƬ³§Growth Hub, the aim is to champion and celebrate the women working in STEM industries and to inspire the future generation.

Worcestershire’s STEM industry is set to grow and now is the time to inspire those that will join the workforce of tomorrow!

By sharing the stories of those that came before, and the successes of the women contributing to these key industries now, we can be the change that catalyses the number of women working in STEM roles. Getting involved shows that your business is open to having more diverse talent pools and is determined to help challenge the stereotypes that job roles are defined by gender.

Women in STEM Week is a new themed week, launched by 91ÖÆƬ³§County Council. It takes place in April and encourages businesses across the county to get involved by sharing their own WiSTEM Stories.

WiSTEM Week sets out to celebrate women who have contributed to the STEM field in the past, as well as highlight those working within it today, and inspire the next generation of women who will be taking up the STEM mantle tomorrow.

Women in STEM Week is also a great opportunity for businesses to advertise any STEM roles they have available. And, for those not currently recruiting, it would be a great opportunity to also give insight into your business sector and the qualifications/experience it takes for people to get there. Get your female employees to share their own routes into work and what they enjoy most about their role.

Generation STEM is run by the Early Careers team and hosts two events in Summer and Winter. These events are aimed at female students in secondary school, allowing them to come and talk with a range of employers who specialise in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. They also get to hear from women working in those industries right now and learn about the different routes they took to get into the career they love. 

Invitations to Generation STEM events are given out by schools and the event is not open to the public.

With the support of 91ÖÆƬ³§LEP and 91ÖÆƬ³§County Council, the Primary STEM Challenge is run by the Early Careers team in partnership with Stemworks. It provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in a hands-on STEM activity, learning about structures and mechanisms and applying this knowledge to solve a construction challenge set by a local employer. 

The programme is an exciting initiative, set out to inspire and give young innovators the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to building a better future for all!
