Call for young volunteers to support Summer Reading Challenge

Authored on

Libraries in 91制片厂are on the lookout for enthusiastic young people aged 13 to 24 to volunteer during this year鈥檚 Summer Reading Challenge.

If you are passionate about books, love working with children, or want to gain experience that will boost your CV or university application, this is your chance to get involved and make a real difference.

Martha Kings, who volunteered in 2023 and now works as a customer advisor in Droitwich Library said: 鈥淰olunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It helped me build skills, meet amazing people, and discover just how much I enjoy supporting others. That journey led me to my current role as a customer advisor at Droitwich Library, where I get to help people every day.鈥

As a volunteer, you will play a key role in encouraging children to read for pleasure, helping them choose books, tracking their progress, and supporting fun library activities throughout the summer.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • inspire children to read and complete the challenge
  • support library activities and events
  • receive training and guidance from library staff
  • build confidence and make new friends

Hannah Perrott, Assistant Director for Communities at 91制片厂County Council added: 鈥淰olunteering is a fantastic way for young people to gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, and build their confidence. It's a great opportunity to try something new, whether you鈥檙e looking for a career in education, library services, or just want to make a positive impact in your community. Volunteering can open doors to new opportunities, personal growth, and a stronger sense of community.鈥

Volunteering is fun, rewarding, and can count towards schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh鈥檚 Award. In 2024, 149 young volunteers gave over 2,000 hours of their time to support the challenge, six even used their experience towards their DofE accreditation!
