Summer Reading Challenge

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest free reading for pleasure programme for children.

Coming this July: Read to The Beat!

This exciting new theme will inspire children to explore the connection between story and songs, discovering how reading and music both ignite imagination and creativity.

For all children aged 4 to 11 years:

  • launch date: Saturday 4 July
  • end date: Saturday 12 September

About the summer reading challenge

Taking place annually, the Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to keep reading during the summer holidays.

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The Summer Reading Challenge helps by regularly reaching over 700,000 children each year, motivating them to visit their local library and keep reading during the holidays, and in turn helping them to maintain their reading skills and confidence.

Young volunteers needed for 91ÖÆƬ³§Libraries' Summer Reading Challenge

91ÖÆƬ³§Libraries are on the lookout for enthusiastic young volunteers, aged 13 to 24, to embark on an exciting journey this summer.

This will be a fabulous opportunity for your students to gain valuable skills and experience, make new connections, and most importantly, have fun! All volunteers will receive comprehensive training and ongoing support from our dedicated library staff.

91ÖÆƬ³§Libraries are seeking dedicated volunteers to contribute a minimum of five hours of their time over the summer, assisting library and learning staff in delivering this year's Challenge. Last year over 165 young volunteers completed an impressive 1,200 cumulative hours. Among them, three volunteers contributed their hours from SRC activities towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award accreditation.
