Libraries at the Heart of Growing Community Participation

Libraries at the Heart of Growing Community Participation

As safe, welcoming, accessible spaces, Worcestershire’s Libraries are an ideal venue for community partners looking to reach a wide local audience.

Tony, who coordinates Sensory Matters, a group supporting people with visual and hearing impairments, explains how hosting Sensory Matters meetings at Redditch and Malvern Libraries has transformed the group into a thriving hub for people with dual sensory impairment.

Tony’s Story

When we started meeting at Redditch and Malvern Libraries, we quickly realised how perfect the spaces were for our Sensory Matters groups.

The rooms are fully accessible, with excellent acoustics for people with dual sensory impairments. The libraries have a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the lighting is just right, people feel comfortable the moment they walk in.

Our sessions help people break out of isolation, and meeting in the library makes a real difference. Members feel more connected, whether staying for a chat after the session, learning new technology with the help of staff and volunteers, or simply enjoying a coffee. Over time, we’ve seen friendships form, confidence grow, and people actively engage with other library services.

Since moving our groups to the libraries, attendance has soared, from just 5 people to over 30 in some sessions. The spaces have truly become a hub for the community. Library staff and volunteers have been invaluable, offering technology support and a friendly face, which gives members the confidence to make the most of the services available.

Partnering with 91ÖÆƬ³§Libraries has been transformational. By providing a safe, welcoming, and accessible space, the libraries have enabled our group to grow, connect, and thrive. Word has spread quickly, and more people are joining every month, showing just how vital libraries are in supporting community wellbeing.
