Foster carers training and development
Training and support on offer for foster carers before and after approval.
The importance of training
Training and development of our foster carers is a priority for us, we believe this is important to ensure the best care for the children, and for the carers, in the demanding task of looking after someone else鈥檚 child.
Applicants will be required to complete some of the training during the assessment process (before approval) and a varied programme of training is also available for approved foster carers to ensure their ongoing personal development.
Training we offer
Before approval, you will attend Skills to Foster preparation training. This is delivered over four sessions (approximately 20 hours altogether).
Core training
We offer the below core training that can be completed either before approval, or within the first year. You will then be required to attend refresher training on the below every three years.

- safer caring
- understanding behaviour and attachment
- valuing difference
- family time (contact)
- what is health
Developmental training
We have a comprehensive programme of additional training that is available to our carers, on topics ranging from food and nutrition to managing behaviour and relationship-based play. The full programme can be downloaded here:
