An example of SCULPT training
As part of our internal SCULPT training provision, we often organise team training sessions that are specific to the needs of whoever is requesting it.
Our SEND and Alternative Provision Partnership Committee welcomed Lydia as a contributing member.
Lydia is blind and uses a screen reader, so it was vital that all committee members and those who created any documents for the board knew how to create accessible content to prevent any barriers to engagement.
As a result, four lunch and learn sessions were organised. These were presented by Lydia alongside our Digital Accessibility lead:
- Word tips including headings, links and alt text
- Word tips including text boxes, tables, colour and contrast
- PowerPoint presentations including reading order and visuals
- Excel spreadsheet basics including how to best format a spreadsheet
Lydia made a point that different screen reader users may have different preferences, but the basic guidance shown in the training should help make content more accessible for everyone.
Videos from each session were recorded or edited together and are available below:
Word tips (headings, links and alt text)
Word (text boxes, tables, colour and contrast)
PowerPoint presentations
Excel spreadsheet basics
Training feedback
We asked those who attended to provide some feedback, the following detailed quote summed up what many said:
The SCULPT accessibility training has made me completely rethink how I structure documents. Hearing first-hand from Lydia how inaccessible documents impact her life provided the context needed for me to really reflect on my own work. Now, any document I make always starts with the SCULPT basics; whether it鈥檚 going to be shared wider or is just for my own use. It makes things so much easier for everyone (including me!) and doesn鈥檛 take any extra work or time. I鈥檝e even started going back through previous work and editing it, to be confident that anybody who picks it up will be able to access it. When we produce something that is accessible, it makes it better for everyone.
