Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

What AI is and how we are using it.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) means using computers and machines to do things that usually need human thinking. AI helps with many things we do every day. For example, it helps us find things on the internet, talk to virtual helpers like Siri and Alexa, and even keeps our money safe. AI is constantly improving.

AI is used in many ways in our daily lives. Search engines like Google use AI to find and rank webpages. Virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri learn from our speech and get better at helping us. Traffic apps use AI to predict traffic. Websites use AI chatbots to help with customer questions, and recommendation systems suggest things we might like based on what we've done before.

Our commitment to ethical AI

We have rules about how we use AI. These rules make sure we use AI in ways that are good for everyone. We have a list of approved AI tools and we check new AI ideas to make sure they are safe, fair, and useful.

How AI is helping us

We use AI to make our services better, safer and faster. Here are some ways we use AI:

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is used within some of our teams. It helps by giving smart suggestions and taking care of simple, repetitive tasks. This allows staff to concentrate on more complicated and important activities, making services more efficient.

Microsoft Sentinel

Microsoft Sentinel helps keep our information safe. It uses machine learning to spot complex attacks by finding suspicious activities. When it finds something, it creates an alert to help us respond quickly.

OutSystems

OutSystems is a platform that helps us build and manage apps quickly. AI in OutSystems helps developers create smart apps faster by guiding them and checking their work. This allows us to make high-quality apps up to 100 times quicker.

Commercial Vehicle and Trailer Permit System

This system is for vehicles and trailers that want to use our Household Recycling Centres. It uses cameras to read vehicle number plates and checks the permits available for each vehicle.

Netcall Connect Chatbot

Netcall Connect is a chatbot on our website that answers customer questions. The chatbot gets better at matching customer questions to the right answers the more it is used.

CLB & AllyLabs Acoustic Monitoring

This system helps care home staff by listening for unusual sounds at night. If a sound goes over a certain level, it sends an alert to care workers to check on the resident. This is part of a 12-month NHS pilot.

Technicare (Armed)

This technology helps monitor patients’ health to avoid hospital admissions and support early discharge. It uses AI in three ways:

  • Vitals: monitors vital signs for people with health conditions, like COPD
  • Fit Bit: tracks activity levels to help prevent falls at home
  • Your Meds: ensures the right medication is taken at the right time

These products will also create "virtual wards" in conjunction with the NHS trial.

Cascade3D

Cascade3D uses small sensors in homes to collect data on daily activities, like using the kettle. This data is shared with family and caregivers to alert them of any changes, allowing for early help.

Tendertec (Hestia)

Tendertec is a fall detector that learns user behaviour and gait. Its machine learning identifies health risks and potential falls. It provides 24/7 monitoring and reassurance.

Stroll DTx software

Stroll DTx software is used in physiotherapy for people with neurological disorders, like Parkinson’s Disease. It uses augmented reality (AR) to improve gait, balance, and reduce fall risks.
