What is it?
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a government benefit for children under 16 who have additional care needs or a disability. It helps families cover the extra costs of looking after their child.
Eligibility:
- child is under 16
- child has difficulties walking or needs much more looking after than a child of the same age who does not have a disability
Relevance to nurseries:
- indicates a child's additional needs, making them eligible for DAF

The Disabled Access Fund (DAF) is a one-off government payment to nurseries and early years settings. It helps make the nursery more accessible and supportive for children with disabilities or additional needs.
Who is it for?
- children under 5 who receive Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- children accessing funded early education (15 or 30 hours)
How it can be used
Supports reasonable adjustments within the nursery, such as:
- purchasing accessible resources
- staff training
- adaptations to the setting
How to apply:
- providers apply on behalf of the child
- requires a copy of the child's DLA letter and a signed Parent Declaration Form

Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP)
What is it?
The Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) is extra government funding for nurseries to support the learning and development of eligible 3- and 4-year-old children.
Who is eligible?
Children accessing funded early education whose families meet certain criteria, such as:
- Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker鈥檚 Allowance
- Universal Credit with a low household income
How it helps:
- provides additional resources, activities, and support tailored to each child鈥檚 learning and development
- helps nurseries give every child the best start, especially those who might benefit from extra support
EYPP is paid directly to the provider and is used to enhance a child鈥檚 learning experience.
