As fireworks season gets underway, residents are being urged to enjoy celebrations safely by following the Firework Code.
The British Fireworks Association鈥檚 Firework Code offers essential safety tips for handling fireworks responsibly. These include buying from licensed retailers, checking for the CE mark, storing fireworks securely in a closed box, and lighting them one at a time at arm鈥檚 length.
91制片厂Trading Standards is also reminding the public to only purchase fireworks from approved sellers. Most licensed outlets are permitted to sell fireworks between October 15 and November 10, although a small number can sell them year-round. To stay safe, avoid buying from unregulated sources such as car boot sales or social media platforms.
Simon Wilkes, Head of Trading Standards, said: 鈥淟icensed suppliers will sell fireworks with the CE mark or UKCA mark that comply with the current safety standards. Do not buy fireworks from unlicensed retailers. These fireworks might be unsafe or illegal, and should be reported to Trading Standards, especially because they could end up in the hands of children.鈥
Officers are also reminding people about when fireworks can be used. It鈥檚 illegal to set them off between 11 pm and 7 am, except on special occasions like Bonfire Night (until midnight), and New Year鈥檚 Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year (until 1 am).
Simon added: 鈥淔ireworks can be really tough for many people, especially those with pets, horses, or livestock, and even some former service personnel who鈥檝e had difficult experiences.
鈥淚f you're planning fireworks at home or running a display at your business, please chat with your neighbours first. It鈥檚 a simple way to show consideration. And remember, using fireworks irresponsibly, like in the street, in public places, or at the wrong times, could lead to a visit from West Mercia Police.鈥
If you are using fireworks at home, the Firework Code includes advice on the following:
- always keep fireworks in a closed box, take them out one at a time and close the box afterwards
- never put fireworks in your pocket
- be considerate. Let your neighbours know you will be having a display, especially if they are elderly or have pets or children
- avoid setting fireworks off later in the evening, particularly if it is a school-night
- ensure your own pets are safe
- carefully follow the instructions on EACH firework
- never go back to a lit firework unless the instructions advise otherwise
- never throw fireworks; it is dangerous
- light fireworks one at a time, at the end of the fuse, and at arm鈥檚 length
- light sparklers one at a time and wear suitable gloves, even when lighting them
- never give sparklers to a child under the age of 5
- never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire
